Personal Learning Objective

One of my personal learning objectives is to clear up common misconceptions of Native American Culture. The reason for choosing this topic as a personal learning objective, is because are still people who believe that all Native Americans are ruthless people who live in tipi's, scalp white people and worship a pagan god. My goal is to eliminate some of these misconceptions through peaceful means of education through this blog, articles, personal experience and video links. May all who read gain new found respect for the culture and may Wankan Tanka (The Creator - God) open your hearts and minds for understanding.

First topic: Which God do you pray to? Fair question and one that is asked of me a lot. The simple answer to this question is, "the same God you pray to". In fact most Native American (NA) cultures utilize the Ten Commandments just like Christians. I have added two links, one that list the NA Ten Commandments and one that lists the Bibles Ten Commandments:

Compare both and let me know if you can see the same sort of values that God expects from all of us.

I had a little girl ask me once" are there Native Americans who do not believe in God"? Of course there are, just like there are white people who do not believe in God. You could see the little girls face light up as if she understood that no matter who you are or what you believe, there will be others that do not believe in the same things that you do. With every form culture, there will be those without good hearts, selfish, and just down right nasty. We all have encountered these individuals and pray that God will someday reveal His love to them.

  1. Jay,

One of my favorite phrases is "God of your understanding". Extreme conservatives may view this phrase as a "cop-out" to the recognition of Christian God, but to me the beauty of the phrase is that it points back to each individual's personal relationship with "God".
